Amantle Montsho fails doping test after Commonwealth games 400m final

GLASGOW, August 2, 2014 - Former world champion Botswana’s Amantle Montsho has been provisionally suspended after failing a doping test following the women’s 400m final at the Commonwealth games in Glasgow.

The Commonwealth games federation announced that Amantle who won the Commonwealth games gold in 2010 and finished fourth in the final last Tuesday at the Hampden Park, tested positive for banned stimulant methylhexaneamine.

The 31 year old’s A sample was found to contain methylhexaneamine, prohibited as a stimulant under class 6 of WADA’s Prohibited List.

Montsho was notified of her A sample result and has asked for her B sample to be tested, which will take place at the accredited laboratory in London on Monday August 4, a day after the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games.

Montsho attended the Provisional Hearing of the Federation Court, presided by CGF Vice-President Bruce Robertson, which ruled that the provisional suspension of the athlete will continue.

Upon receipt of the analysis of the athlete’s B sample, the Court will reconvene to consider the matter further.

The Botswana runner who has struggled for form this season won the gold at the World championships and followed it with silver in Moscow last year is considered one of the finest 400m runners in Africa in recent times.
