Korea becomes latest country to donate to Anti-Doping Research Fund

November 5, 2014 - WADA is pleased to announce that Korea has become the latest country to offer a financial commitment to the Anti-Doping Research Fund that was announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in late 2013.

Korea has initially contributed KRW 200,000,000 as part of a global government initiative to match the IOC’s pledge to invest US $10 million in innovative anti-doping research. The country has committed to providing an eventual total fund of US $500,000, significantly helping the IOC and WADA in their efforts to fund innovative athlete-centered anti-doping research, which will explore new techniques for the detection of prohibited substances and methods.

Korea is the fifth country to offer its financial commitment to the fund following the decisions of Turkey, China, Saudi Arabia and the United States of America to offer their support.

Governments have until 16 November to make commitments to contributions that will help raise the total research fund for the joint IOC / WADA initiative to US $20million.

WADA President, Sir Craig Reedie: “Korea hosted a tremendous Asian Games only weeks ago, and in doing so showed the world its commitment to the sporting values of fair play and honesty. It is timely that Korea has followed on from this positive experience by pledging its support to clean sport, and the anti-doping research fund that was announced by the IOC last December.

“WADA is pleased that Korea has joined Saudi Arabia, China, Turkey and the United States in committing to this research, and I hope that others will follow the lead of these nations by supporting the fund. My personal thanks go to Dr. Kim Chong, the Vice Minister for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) in the Republic of Korea for his help in making this contribution happen.”
