WADA Director General Statement on Kenyan Television Documentary

April 16, 2015 - WADA Director General, David Howman: “This new Kenyan documentary corroborates and adds to many of the findings from the 2012 German documentary which alleged that unethical doctors were providing doping substances to athletes. This is of concern to WADA and the broader anti-doping community.”

WADA has seen the Kenyan television documentary (Citizen Television) which contains a number of allegations surrounding the influence of the athlete entourage in relation to the provision of banned substances and methods to Kenyan athletes.

We were alarmed by the issues raised in the 2012 German television documentary (ARD) relating to the assistance offered by unethical doctors in Kenya in providing doping substances to athletes. This new Kenyan documentary corroborates and adds to many of those allegations, and this is a concern to WADA and the broader anti-doping community, too.

Where evidence from the documentary leads to breaches of the World Anti-Doping Code, WADA would expect the appropriate bodies to fully investigate and take action.

WADA recently signed a Partnership Agreement with Anti-Doping Norway (ADN), the China Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA), the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), and the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts, Kenya, in an effort to provide a project plan to develop an effective anti-doping program for Kenya and the countries within the Zone V RADO.

We will discuss the documentary allegations with the Task Force, and will engage the authorities in Kenya during the forthcoming regional Zone V RADO meeting in Nairobi.
