May 6, 2015 - Representatives of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) met with Egyptian sports and anti-doping authorities recently to propel the progress of the country’s development of a National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO).
Egypt is one of the biggest sporting nations in Africa, and developing its own NADO is seen as the first major step to installing a robust anti-doping program and having a WADA-accredited laboratory.
Following the 26 April meeting, the Egyptian sport authorities – comprising board members of the Egyptian NADO, the Sports Minister, Khaled Abdel Aziz, and the Egyptian Olympic Committee – representatives agreed to fully implement their national anti-doping program, finalize a board for the NADO and prioritize policy and strategic support in the years ahead. Once this work is complete, the focus will be on progressing the laboratory accreditation process.
“Egypt made some progress at its recent meeting with WADA in Cairo, and has now agreed to focus on the development of its NADO and anti-doping program,” said Rob Koehler, WADA’s Senior Director, Education and NADO/RADO Relations. “The country has faced some challenges in the past, but we now believe they are on the right track to bolstering their national anti-doping program. This is good news for clean athletes in Egypt and right across the African continent,” added Koehler.
