The IX Paralympic Winter Games opened in the Italian city of Turin on March 10, 2006, drawing approximately 535 athletes from 39 countries and regions. A new sport will be making its debut in Turin: wheelchair curling, bringing the total number of sports to be contested to four: Alpine skiing, ice sledge hockey, Nordic skiing and wheelchair curling.
The Torino Paralympic Winter Games will be held from March 10-19, 2006.
