(Beijing, May 13) A summing-up meeting on construction of Olympic venues and national teams' training facilities was held by the General Administration of Sport of China in Beijing on May 12, 2008. At the meeting the GASC cited 10 advanced units and 92 outstanding individuals for the remarkable achievements they have made in Olympic venue construction in the past six years.
Attending the meeting were GASC Director Liu Peng, deputy directors Wang Jun and Xiao Tian and director-assistant Xiao Min, officials from the National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Finance, National Audit Office, Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG), BOCOG Supervision Commission and Beijing 2008 Engineering Command Office, and representatives of building workers and units. During 2001 and 2007 a total of 41 Olympic venue and training facility projects were completed, covering a surface area of 530,000 square meters with a total investment of 3.8 billion yuan. Among these projects 8 are newly-built or renovated Olympic venues and 33 were facilities for national teams' training, living, scientific research and different short training courses.
Along with the completion of these projects greening, roads around the areas, electricity, heating, water supply and sewer system, natural gas, communication network as well as all other supporting facilities were all completed as scheduled. So far, the eight Olympic venues have all successfully hosted the "Good Luck Beijing" Sport Events, and the training facilities for the national teams have all been delivered for use.
It was the first time for the General Administration of Sport to make investment in such a short time and accomplish the arduous task of the Olympic venue construction.
GASC director-assistant Xiao Min made the report at the summing-up meeting themed "Same Fighting Spirit, Special Gold Medal".
Deputy director Xiao Tian then announced the names of the units and individuals cited by the GASC in recognition of their contributions to Beijing's Olympic venue construction.
After the awarding ceremony representatives of the GASC Shooting and Archery Administrative Center and Olympic Center gave accounts of the difficult time as well as the success they had experienced in the last few years.
At the end of the meeting GASC Director Liu Peng made a speech, affirming the achievements made and setting even higher demands on all sports workers for ensuring the successful hosting of the Beijing Olympic Games in the coming August.
