YANGON, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar Olympic Day Run 2007 Archery Competition will be held here next week aimed at getting more medals in the 24th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and emerging new generation archers in the country, according to the Myanmar Archery Federation (MAF) on Saturday.

Local archers will compete in men's and women's compound and recurve events in the Olympic Day Run 2007 Archery Competition scheduled on June 29 at the Kyaikkasan Archery Ground, the MAF said.

Meanwhile, the Myanmar archery team, comprising 19 archers -- six men and four women for recurve and five men and four women for compound, trained by South Korean coach Jin Su Ho since March 27, has been making preparation since last November to compete in the 24th SEA Games, the MAF said.

Of the 19 Myanmar selected archers, seven competed in the 23rd SEA Games of which one archer got gold medal in the recurve event, it said.

Moreover, aiming to get long-term achievements in the international archery competitions and to assist the Myanmar selected archery team, 35 new generation archers have been training in the country, it added.

Myanmar pocketed one gold and three bronze medals in the 23rd SEA Games.

In November last year, Myanmar hosted the second SEA Archery Championships at the Kyaikkasan Archery Ground here. Six member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) --Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and host Myanmar -- participated in the championships, in which Myanmar archers claimed one gold, eight silver and two bronze medals, placing third behind Indonesia and the Philippines in the medals table.

The Myanmar Archery Federation was established in 1995, and since then Myanmar archers took part in 32 international competitions. Myanmar has a strong archery record and has won 136 international medals -- 42 gold, 43 silver and 51 bronzes so far.
