2010-06-22 - Ahead of the announcement of the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Candidate Cities, the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Games Bid Committee participated in the 2010 Olympic Day Run on Sunday (June 20, 2010). Held annually around the world, the event celebrates the anniversary of the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on June 23, 1894.
Over 20 members of the PyeongChang 2018 Bid Committee and approximately 80 members of Dong-sa-mo, a PyeongChang 2018 supporters group, took part in the 5,000 metre run to illustrate their commitment to the Olympic Movement and support for the country's bid to host the 2018 Games.
In total, approximately 3,000 participants gathered on Peace Square in front of the World Peace Gates of Seoul's Olympic Park built for the 1986 Asian Games and 1988 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Participants also included several Olympic medallists from the Vancouver Games such as Seung-hoon Lee, Sang-Hwa Lee and Tae-Beom Mo.
Sang-Hwa Lee, gold medallist from Vancouver 2010 said: "The Olympic Day Run is an important event for all our Olympians because it encourages people of all ages to get active and play sport. Our passion is sport and we support PyeongChang 2018 because it aims to get young people in Korea and across Asia participating in winter sports, a goal which we think will also resonate within the Olympic Family."
Yangho Cho, Chairman and CEO of PyeongChang 2018, commented: "The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Games Bid Committee is delighted and honoured to have participated in the Olympic Day Run - a true celebration of the IOC and the values of Olympism. The Olympic Day Run in Korea demonstrates our country's commitment to the Olympic Movement and we want to highlight with our bid how we can now help connect the Movement with millions of new, young hearts and minds across the Asian region."
