06 Apr 2011, New Delhi, India: The Indian Olympic Association is taking big steps to promote Olympic Day, which is held annually on or around June 23 throughout the global Olympic Movement. In a circular to the State Olympic Association, IOA Secretary General Randhir Singh encourages all the States/UT Olympic Associations to organise Olympic Day.
“Olympic Day is the annual worldwide event of the Olympic Movement,” he says in the letter. “It is a day for everyone – regardless of ability – to take the chance to play sport, to run or to exercise.”
With June 23 this year falling on a Thursday, activities can be held the weekend preceding or following official Olympic Day.
“The run can be considered as the core activity of Olympic Day,” the circular continues. “Besides the run, cultural events, competitions or the demonstration of other sports popular in the region can be organised.” The celebration of Olympic Day is based on three pillars: Move, Learn and Discover.
