28 May 2011, Kathmandu, Nepal: A Peace Rally and Fun Run will be the highlights of a week-long programme of festivities by the Nepal Olympic Committee to celebrate Olympic Day 2011. The events will attract between 5,000 and 6,000 participants and take place in Bhairahawa-Lumbini in the west region of Nepal, the birthplace of Lord Buddha. The motto for the NOC activities is: “Generate ideals and transform lives through integration, peace and harmony.”
The events will include:
*5-km Peace Rally in Lumbini, Lord Buddha's birth place, on June 23, Olympic Day.
*Inter-school quiz on the Olympic Movement from June 17-19 at SOS Children’s Village.
*Inter-school art competition on Olympic culture and education on June 19 at Deep Jyoti Boarding School.
*Inter-school basketball competition from June 20-22 at Moon Light Boarding School.
*Olympic Day 2011 5-km Fun Run road race for all age groups on June 22 at Lumbini Gate, Bhairahawa.
*20-20 friendship cricket match between Nepal Olympic Committee and West Region XI on June 20 at New Horizon Boarding School.
“On behalf of Nepal Olympic Committee, I share with you in celebrating the Peace Walk and Olympic Day 2011 Rally with a motto One World One Dream,” says Sunil Rajkarnikar, Executive Member of NOC Nepal and Director of the Olympic Day Committee.
“As all of us know, Nepal at the moment is undergoing political transformation, which is one of the challenges for peace. But I am sure if we get an opportunity like this we can improve the condition.”
The festivities begin on June 15 with a press meeting and Candle Light for Peace vigil at Lord Buddha marg-Bhairahawa, followed by a motorcycle rally on June 16.
After the Peace Rally on June 23 there will be songs and demonstrations of karate, taekwondo and wushu, followed by a culture programme.
