12,000 Uzbeks celebrate Olympic Day 2011

07 Jun 2011, Tashkent, Uzbekistan: Olympic Day 2011, organised by the National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan, took place on Sunday, May 29, in the National Park named after Alisher Navoi in Tashkent and devoted to the 20th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Since its foundation in 1992, NOC Uzbekistan continues the tradition of celebrating Olympic Day. Annually this event becomes more and more popular and the number of participants significantly increases.

Continuing these traditions and promoting the Olympic ideals of the International Olympic Committee through NOC Uzbekistan, 12,000 athletes and sports fans from all regions of Uzbekistan took part in the preliminary stages of Olympic Day 2011.

Over 1,000 of them achieved the best results and participated in the final stage in Tashkent. There were 21 routes for distances of 0.3 mile, 0.5 mile and 1 mile in age categories from 6 to 92.

The youngest runners (4-5 years) were from Tashkent city kindergarten and participated in the route for a distance of 50 meters. Paralympics also took part in the final runs in a distance of 0.3 miles.

Following the good traditions, all participants received Olympic Day 2011 sports uniforms and were presented with participation certificates signed by IOC President Dr Jacques Rogge. Winners received prizes and gifts, awarded by the sport officials and famous athletes of Uzbekistan

Representatives of the diplomatic missions accredited in Uzbekistan - Great Britain, Kazakhstan, Russian Federation, Republic of Korea and Tajikistan - took active part in the event.
