NOC Sri Lanka celebrates Olympic Day 2011

29 Jun 2011, Colombo, Sri Lanka: The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka staged a wide variety of events in Vavuniya over two days to celebrate Olympic Day 2011. The activities began with a tree-planting ceremony on Thursday, June 23, at 4pm at the Urban Council library and at 5pm at the College of Education.

On June 24 at 1.30pm, the finalists of the art competition were judged from 50 participating schools in the Vavuniya district.

The main event, Olympic Day Run, commenced at 3pm from the Urban Council grounds, Vavuniya. It was held over four kilometers and involved over 1,000 schoolchildren.

The run was followed by a cultural show, a physical training display by the Sri Lankan army, a donation of books to 50 participating schools by Sri Lanka Telecom, the awarding of prize money for the art competition and the distribution of IOC certificates to all participants of the run.
The art activities included a banner competition for teams of five children per school and a poster competition for individuals. The top three in each category received cash prizes.
