Bangladesh celebrates Olympic Day

17 Jul 2011, Dhaka, Bangladesh: The Bangladesh Olympic Association observed Olympic Day 2011 with a series of events in keeping with the theme Move, Learn and Discover. One of the main events was the Olympic Day Run, which took place simultaneously in the capital, 64 districts and seven divisional headquarters across the country amidst high enthusiasm on June 24.

The Honorable State Minister for Youth and Sport, Md. Ahad Ali Sarker, MP, inaugurated the Olympic Day Run, at which the Chief of Army Staff and the President of BOA, General Md Abdul Mubeen, presided over the ceremony. Some 5,000 people took part in the Dhaka run.

The run in the capital started from Engineers Institute, Ramna, and after moving through different parts of the city concluded at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. IOC, OCA and BOA flags were displayed throughout the celebration. The Olympic Building was fully decorated and illuminated at night, drawing the attention of all.

An art competition was arranged on June 22 to mark Olympic Day and a total of 150 children in three age categories rook part.

A sports competition for the under-privileged, intellectually challenged and street urchins was held at the handball stadium throughout the day and a kabaddi competition for boys and girls was organised to popularise the national game in Kabaddi Stadium, Dhaka.

On completion of the run, a blood donation programme was organised at Olympic Bhaban.

On June 25, for the first time, a photo exhibition and competition named “Pictorial presentation of Bangladesh Sports” was held at the BOA Bhaban. Around 500 rare and special sports photographs by the renowned photographers of the country were displayed. The BOA President inaugurated the photo exhibition.

The BOA awarded 10 photographers at the concluding session of the exhibition on June 30. Many rare photographs were collected for the BOA archive through the exhibition.

Prior to a Sports and the Environment seminar on June 22, a tree was planted in front of Olympic Bhaban as part of the this year’s BOA Slogan of “Go Green” and UN Slogan of “Year of Forest”.

The BOA arranged the plantation of saplings around the National Stadium, sports venues and 20 saplings each in 20 educational institutions. BOA has a plan to plant 20,000 saplings in different stadiums and institutions across the country.

On June 25 a cultural show followed by a reception on behalf of the organising committee and sponsors was held to exchange views and ideas as well as to draw the curtain on Olympic Day2011. Before the cultural programme, the BOA President handed over crests to representatives of organising partners.
