Bhutan Olympic Day attracts 3,000 participants

21 Sep 2011, Thimphu, Bhutan: The Bhutan Olympic Committee celebrated Olympic Day 2011 at Sherubtse College, Trashigang, earlier this month. The festivities began with a tree-planting ceremony followed by a 6-km run before the actual celebrations started. Olympic Day encourages the organisation of a wide range of activities inspired by the Olympic Values, and this was achieved in Bhutan with the help of the 15 sports federations affiliated to the Bhutan Olympic Committee.

The activities included sporting events which encouraged people, regardless of age, athletic ability and gender, to move and discover new sports. During his address to the gathering in Kanglung, Sonam Karma Tshering, Secretary General of the Bhutan Olympic Committee, said: “This special day is an important tool for introducing young people to sport, and I’m proud to say that, with this year’s efforts, the Olympic Movement has reached our young people in Trashigang.”

The Bhutan Olympic Committee is grateful to the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Asia for their support in hosting this event. As a member of the International Olympic Movement, BOC looks forward to being a part of the continued growth of the International Olympic Family around the world.

Over 3,000 people comprising of students and sports enthusiasts took part in the celebrations, which were graced by His Majesty’s representative and the President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee. A tokha (lunch) was provided to all the participants present during the celebrations, which ended with a friendly football game between the officials of the BOC and the lecturers of Sherubtse College.

The President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee is His Majesty’s representative, HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, with Mr. Sonam Karma Tshering as the Secretary General. Bhutan celebrated Olympic Day on September 11.
