09 May 2013, Phnom Penh, Cambodia: The National Olympic Committee of Cambodia will use the 3rd Phnom Penh International Half Marathon to celebrate Olympic Day in June. The half marathon will be held on June 16 - one week before the official Olympic Day of June 23 - and will incorporate three categories: 21km, 10km and 3km, the latter intended as a fun run for parents and children.
The event will take place in the centre of the capital, starting in front of the Royal Palace and running alongside four rivers. The half marathon will be a three-pronged occasion held in conjunction with World Environment Day, the 119th Olympic Day and to celebrate the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Norodom Monineath Sihanouk.
Registration fees will support Kantha Bopha Hospital and Cambodian Mine Action Centre to aid survivors of land mine accidents. In other news from Cambodia, the new national sports stadium was inaugurated on April 12 by Prime Minister Hun Sen. It will cost US$39 million to construct and will take nine years to complete, in time for the hosting of the SEA Games in 2023.
On June 13, Prime Minister Hun Sen will inaugurate the new offices of the NOC of Cambodia which will include a sports science and medicine centre funded by the OCA’s Olympasia Project.
