23 Jun 2013, Manama, Bahrain: The Bahrain Olympic Committee celebrated Olympic Day on Sunday, June 23 by holding a 3km walkathon involving more than 150 participants. The event started from Dohat Award Walkway in Muharraq, where all the participants were able to complete the distance in 45 minutes. Open to residents and expats of all ages, the walkathon was one of several programmes set up by the BOC’s corporate communications department.

Other activities included a Sports Medicine Centre corner, diabetes and high blood pressure tests for the public, which is part of the BOC’s cooperation with the Ministry of Health, and children’s activities such as face painting, colourful balloons and sideshows. A wide range of souvenirs were given away to all those who took part, including T-shirts, caps, water bottles and certificates of participation signed by the BOC and the International Olympic Committee.

The event was held under the patronage of BOC acting general secretary Abdulrahman Askar in the presence of board members Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa and Abdulhakim Al Shino, as well as financial and administrative affairs executive director Jehad Khalfan and sports affairs executive director Noaman Al Hassan.

“Celebrating the birth of the Olympic Movement in 1894, Olympic Day is today much more than a sporting event,” said Askar. “It is an opportunity to encourage the young and not-so-young, regardless of their sporting ability and their background, to get moving, learn about the benefits of physical activity, discover new sports and reflect on the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.”
