28/06/2013 - From Lausanne to Nanjing, from Lillehammer to Sochi, tens of thousands of sports enthusiasts and YOG fans around the world got active for Olympic Day.
Nanjing, host city of the second Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2014, got into the sporting spirit by being one of 23 Chinese cities to take part in the 27th Olympic Day Run, sponsored by the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC). Seeking to promote a healthy lifestyle and spread the word about the Olympic Movement and its values, China saw over 50,000 runners taking part in the fun run.
However, Nanjing was not the only city to get in the Olympic Day spirit. Here in Lausanne, Switzerland, the home of the International Olympic Committee, over a thousand people joined the Olympic Day run. In the United States, more than 700 sporting and educational events were organised, with nearly 370 athletes attending to act as role models.
Brazil, host country of the next summer Olympic Games, in 2016, planned a range of sports and cultural activities, including sports clinics and chats with national sporting stars, to encourage young and old to get active and discover new sports. And a 3-km walkathon in Bahrain encouraged locals and expats to celebrate Olympic Day in a fun way.
YOG fans were also very active on social media, sharing with us their sporting moments as part of the Olympic Day contest. Stay tuned as the winner will be revealed soon!
