12 Jul 2014, Singapore: 2000 from Singapore participated in the worldwide celebration of Olympic Day this morning with a fun run and try-outs of various Olympic Sports related activities at West Coast Park. Guest-of-Honour Mr Sam Tan Chin Siong, Minister of State, Prime Minister’s Office & Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, joined by 9 Olympian Singapore athletes, flagged off the 2.6 km Olympic Day Run at 8.40 am.
Presented annually by McDonald’s and the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), the Run looks to spread the Olympic ideals and values of excellence, friendship and respect, and encourage people of all athletic abilities to get active.
“The Olympic Day Run is a great opportunity to encourage everyone regardless of age, abilities and their background, to come together, get active and embrace the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect. We are very pleased to be collaborating with McDonald’s.
Worldwide Partner of the Olympic Games, to organise this year’s Olympic Day Run. We hope that the participants will enjoy the activities with representatives of the SNOC Athletes’ Commission and Olympians Singapore, and bond together as a community. We are also pleased to work with the Singapore Environment Council to promote and implement green environment-friendly initiatives, like we did last year,” said Mr Chris Chan, Secretary-General of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC).
“Since 1976, McDonald’s has been a Worldwide Partner of the Olympic Games and here in Singapore, we have been bringing the Olympic ideals and values closer to the community as the exclusive global presenter of Olympic Day Run since 2003. This is also one of the activities that our employees and their families look forward to every year - to get up and go active!” said Ms Phyllis Cheung, Managing Director of McDonald’s Restaurants (Singapore).
Participants, consisting of families and friends who signed up through the official race microsite, primary and secondary students, 700 McDonald’s employees and their families, also tried their hands on Archery Tag, Hand Ball, Futsal, and Kite Colouring.
