HOHHOT, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Outdoor sports lovers should make thorough preparation to avoid possible danger, an organizer of the first hiking competition in Inner Mongolia warned on Saturday.
"Outdoor activities become more popular everyday among young people in China but they have to be aware that some of the activities are extreme sports and may be dangerous and straining," said Ma Wei, a senior official from Hohhot Sports Bureau, which co-host the hiking competition.
Ma listed several most popular outdoor events such as bungee jumping, drift, surfing, skiing, water skiing, hiking and scuba diving.
"Young people love challenges and excitement from these activities. But they also should be fit enough, have certain knowledge and be fully prepared in order to make sure their safety," Ma said.
"They should also know that not all people can do these sports, for instance, people suffering from cardiovascular disease," he added.
A tragedy happened during the week-long May Day vacation when a female traveler Ning Qian died in the hikes in the Hobq desert in Inner Mongolia. The other fifty-four tourists were rescued after being stranded in the desert in north China.
