Beijing promotes 'Sports for All'

(BEIJING, Feb. 28) -- The Beijing municipal government will organize a series of sports activities in 2007 under the theme of "Sports for all goes together with the Olympic Games," according to the organizers.

The city will allocate funds to build sport facilities and make them available in every village, create more community sport centers, and organize the Sixth Beijing Sports for All Festival from June 23 to July 13, in addition to championships of table tennis, badminton, basketball and football for ordinary citizens, Sun Xuecai, vice-director of the Municipal Sports Administration told a press conference at the Beijing Olympic Media Center on Wednesday.

He said the city will also stage the Sixth Beijing Farmers Sports Games in October as well as the 21st Beijing Chess Competition for the disabled, plus sport meetings for the employees of foreign-funded enterprises and for migrant workers in Beijing.

Besides making joint efforts with the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) to run the 23 "Good Luck Beijing" events, the municipality will organize 10 large-scale international sport events, including the 2007 World Snooker China Open, 2007 Beijing Spring Long-Distance Running Competition, World Taekwondo Championship, American Football League Competition, Beijing Guoan vs. Barcelona, World Powered Paragliding Championship, Fourth Tennis China Open, Third Triathlon World Cup, 26th Beijing International Marathon and the pre-season NBA., giving the citizens an opportunity to enjoy the high-level international events, Sun added.

The official said Beijing will stage several mass sport and cultural activities around the one-year countdown to the Olympics, such as contests of "courteous supporters", forums, the construction of "Sports for All Paths" around the Olympic venues and a ceremony of inauguration for the Beijing Sport Training Center for the Disabled.
