
Press conference on the inaugural "Fitness of the Nation Carnival"
(Beijing, August 5) To celebrate China's first "Fitness of the Nation Carnival" on August 8, a series of fitness activities will be conducted all over the country on August 7-9, 2009. By the time all sports facilities of the National Olympic Sports Center in Beijing will be open to the public free, and people of all ages can experience up to 32 fitness activities there and then.
At a press conference on the carnival held in Beijing on August 4, Sports Minister in charge of the General Administration of Sport (GASC) Liu Peng said that the annual Fitness of the Nation Carnival was set not only to mark the first anniversary of the 2008 Olympic Games but also to give full play to the social value of sport and to help enrich local people's cultural life, thereby meeting their needs of developing in an all-round way.
As the "Fitness of the Nation Carnival 2009" is the first of its kind held ever since the founding of New China in 1949, Liu added, it will also be a grand celebration of the 60th anniversary of the country.
According to Feng Jianzhong, Deputy Sports Minister in charge of the GASC, at the launching ceremony of the inaugural carnival to be held in Beijing's Olympic Park on the morning of August 8, the opening day of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, some 40,000 people will give a spectacular group demonstration of taijiquan, while a total of 32 sports and fitness activities will be organized, such as soccer matches, junior roller skating performances, swimming challenges, wushu demonstration, children's group calisthenics, fitness tests and ethnic sports games, to name just a few.
To respond to the main site of the national carnival in Beijing, provinces, regions and cities all over China will also carry out various activities, including the First National Fitness Meet for the Seniors in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, the 10,000-people Wushu Performance in Heilongjiang Province and the "Meet the Asian Games, Create New Life" 1,000-people jogging in Guangdong Province.
