(Beijing, August 8) The First Sport for All Science Conference & government high-level forum opened today in Beijing's National Olympic Sports Center, drawing some 300 experts from in and outside China. Liu Peng, Sports Minister in charge of the General Administration of Sport (GASC), also attended the meeting and delivered the opening speech.
Held on August 8, 2009, the first National Fitness Day in China, the conference, themed "Sport for All: Social Responsibility and Scientific Development", is meant to make people more aware of the importance of the sport for all. As Liu Peng pointed out in his speech, because of the successful hosting of the Beijing Olympic Games people's enthsiasm for sports ran to an unprecedented height and it is high time to devote major efforts to developing sport for all and quicken China's step to become a world sporting power.
After the opening ceremony officials in charge from the Civilization Office of the CPC Central Committee, Ministry of Education, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Health, National Tourism Administration, China National Committee on Aging, All-China Federation of Trade Unions, All-China Women's Federation, Communist Youth League of China and China Disabled Persons' Federation, who had been specially invited to the government high-level forum, delivered speeches on sport for all from different angles.
The three-day conference will listen to eight themed reports and have academic exchanges through more than 200 wall papers and 400 theses.
