For the first time in the Asiad history, the Games were hosted in Middle East. Tehran, the capital of Aryameher Empire known as Iran, hosted these Games which featured 16 sports with the maximum participation of 2,363 athletes and officials from 25 countries/NOCs so far, including the People's Republic of China.

Democratic People's Republic of Korea brought the largest delegation to the Asian Games. It was a sure sign of growth and expansion of the Asian Games Movement. Gymnastics and Fencing were new additional disciplines from this Asiad.In addition to use of the state-of-the-art technologies, from synthetic track to photo-finish camera, the Games were known for strict security measures due to reported threats from the Palestinians and a Japanese militant sect.

In her debut in the Asian Games China collected 33 golds to rank third in gold medal tally following Japan with 74 and Iran with 36.
