Thirty-one years after its genesis, the Asian Games made a full circle back to its birth place, New Delhi, India. Within the harmonious '50s to the blustery '80s, the Asiad had been rewarded with better understanding and further promotion of friendship through sports between Asian countries/NOCs.

At the 9th Asiad, the competing countries/NOCs grew three-fold (33) and participants nine times (3,345). There was a drastic change in the race for medals. Although the total amount of medals won were the same, China excelled Japan in gold medals with 61, followed by Japan with 57 and Korea with 28.

Also, it was the last Asiad to be held under the authority of the Asian Games Federation (AGF) with the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) taking over the responsibility.
