The 14th Asian Games, whose ideology was "New Vision New Asia", were held in Pusan, Korea. The Games mascot represents a sea gull, the city bird of Pusan, and denotes its dynamic and pure image.

The mascot was named "Duria", which means "you and me together" in the Korean language, and expresses the ideal of the Games: To promote unity and partnership among Asian countries.

A record number of participants in the Games history — about 10,000 including 6,714 athletes from 44 countries/NOCs and regions — took part in the 15-day sports gala for the whole Asia.

Altogether 38 sports were contested, with China topping the gold medal tally with 150 golds, followed by host Korea with 96 and Japan with 44.
