Encompassing 6 sports and 51 events, the 5th Asian Winter Games were held in Aomori, Japan on February 1-8, 2003 with the participation of some 1,200 athletes and officials from 29 countries/NOCs and regions.

China sent a 176-member delegation to these Games, including 117 athletes who competed in 44 events of nine disciplines. As a result, China ranked third in gold medal tally with 9 golds, 11 silvers and 13 bronzes following host Japan (24, 23, 20) and Korea (10, 8, 10).
