WADA congratulates Theodore Friedmann for winning prestigious Japan Prize

February 5, 2015 - WADA congratulates the chair of its Gene Doping Expert Group, Theodore Friedmann, MD, who, on 28 January 2015, was named one of three recipients of the prestigious 2015 Japan Prize. The international award honors laureates whose ‘original and outstanding achievements in science and technology have advanced the frontiers of knowledge and served the cause of peace and prosperity for mankind.’

Dr. Friedmann, Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, was recognized for his pioneering research and contributions to the development of gene therapy. The Japan Prize Foundation described Friedmann as ‘the father of gene therapy.’

WADA Director General, David Howman: “WADA would like to congratulate Dr. Friedmann for winning this prestigious prize. Theodore has contributed a great deal to clean sport over the years, and WADA and the anti-doping community are hugely appreciative of his efforts. This award is well deserved.”

The WADA Gene Doping Expert Group gives direction to the Agency’s Health, Medical and Research Committee in relation to the threat of gene doping by developing strategies to prevent and detect non-therapeutic manipulation of gene/protein in sport.
